A List of "Interesting Stories" from GRIC Newspapers
A personal collection of a thousand GRIC-related stories—what stood out, what made me laugh, and what might help you find your own thread.
Ok - I hear you… over 1,000 issues of newspapers is a lot of reading.
Trust me, I get it - I read through a whole lot of them. It might seem overwhelming at first - Let me help a bit.
I’ve added a new table to both the Gila River News Database and the Roots and Rivers Database that may help you a bit. In the table I’ve included what I consider “Interesting Stories”.
These are just, like, my opinion man.
As I was reading, I marked stories that stood out to me. Some were cool, some felt important for the time, and some were just relevant to things I’m researching. Your mileage may vary, but if you’re not sure where to start, try scrolling through and seeing if anything catches your eye.
I also added the photos and scans I have of the Chick Pan, along with the stories I pulled from it. The full issues aren’t digitized yet, and I didn’t always note the exact issue I pulled each story from—sorry. Hopefully someday. But for now, at least you can get a glimpse into some of what was being shared back then.
Fair warning: not all of these are “interesting” by any objective measure. I mean, I saved one “Third Grade Story” from the Pima Gazette just because it mentioned a rez dog—I thought it was funny. You’ll also find plenty of personal or small stories that just stuck with me for one reason or another.
Anyway—maybe it’ll help you dig something up in the middle of all these papers.
Cheers,
LB
